Tuesday, March 9, 2010 – Residents from the Boguis community in Babonneau are overjoyed at the completion of a major road development project in the community.

Last Friday, residents witnessed the official opening of the one mile long Boguis Community Road which was funded by the Taiwanese government at a cost of four hundred and fourteen thousand dollars.

Parliamentary representative for the area Honourable Ezekiel Joseph, says the project was born out of his vision to improve the standard of living in the area and ensure proper road access for residents and motorists.

“The question of proper access for the ambulances is important because when people are sick we want to ensure that the ambulance can access the area without delays. We must also ensure that there is proper access for the fire services and other emergency personnel in time of distress. We also know that residents face a lot of challenges in getting their goods home from town without proper road access; now these are things of the past.”

The road is of tremendous importance to the Boguis community as it serves as the main bypass to the community school and other significant community landmarks.

Parliamentary Representative for the area says the Boguis residents have been deserving of such a project for a long time.

“What we did is negotiate with a major contractor to do the surface of the roads and we also agreed to employ people from the Boguis community to do the drains and by doing so we were able to employ eighteen small contractors who were all involved in undertaking the drainage works, so there was a deliberate attempt to involve the community in the execution of the project.”

The Taiwanese Embassy says it will continue to fund projects that positively impact on the lives of ordinary Saint Lucians.
