Tuesday, January 5, 2010 – Prime Minister Stephenson King leaves the island on Wednesday, January, 6th, 2010 as head of a five member delegation for a State Visit to the Republic of Cuba. The visit is in response to an invitation by the Government of Cuba and will be his first overseas engagement as Prime Minister for the New Year. The delegation travelling with the Prime Minister will comprise: Hon. Arsene James, Minister of Education and Culture; Hon. Keith Mondesir, Minister of Health, Wellness, Family Affairs, National Mobilisation, Human Services, and Gender Relations; Dr. June Soomer, Ambassador for CARICOM and the OECS, Mrs. Rosalia King, Wife of Prime Minister King and Mr. Darnley Lebourne, Government Press Secretary.

 

During the visit, Prime Minister King and his delegation are expected to meet with Saint Lucian student nurses and academics studying in Cuba. Talks will also be held with Cuban officials on matters of mutual interest in the areas of Health, Education and Training and Sports. Prime Minister is also expected to pay courtesy calls on various senior officials within the Cuban Government and participate in a number of sight-seeing and social-cultural events.

 

The five (5) day State visit to Cuba will provide an opportunity for Officials from both Countries to engage in discussions on various matters of mutual interest. The visit will also serve to further cement and consolidate the long standing ties between the people and Governments of Saint Lucia and Cuba.

 

Prime Minister King and the delegation are expected to return to the island on January 11th, 2010.
