Wednesday 10 November 2010  Earlier this week Prime Minister of  Grenada, Honourable Tillman Thomas,  visited Saint Lucia to oversee the destruction done to the island by Hurricane Tomas. As head of the Association of Small Island States, AOSIS, prime minister Tillman’s fact-finding mission was undertaken to determine the necessary mechanisms that are to be triggered to assist the country in its rehabilitation efforts.

“Whatever we could do as chair of AOSIS, we will do.  We have some leverage and we could do whatever  we could do to access funds to assist in making representations on behalf of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent. We have always been trying to bring to the attention of the international community our vulnerability and now we have seen it. We live in an area which is prone to disaster and we need to get funding for adaptation and mitigation. This is a situation where we really have to appeal to the climate change associates to see if we could access support to help the people of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent at this time.

Prime minister King noted that in this time of distress, the government and people of Saint Lucia are appreciative of any assistance rendered by  friendly agencies and governments. Regional integration, Mr. King said, is hinged on countries coming to the rescue of each other, particularly in times of need.

“I believe his visit is commendable, it is timely and it is very encouraging for OECS and CARICOM. This is really what we need in the region, when our brothers are faced with challenges for others to come forward and to demonstrate support and give encouragement on the way forward.”

Prime Minister Tillman returned to his country after touring the south east of the country.
