Wednesday 3 November 2010  Following a Public Sector Heads meeting in response to the passage of hurricane Tomas, Prime Minster Hon. Stephenson King announced the measures taken by the Government thus far,  including the decision to enforce a declaration of disaster which would allow for certain things to be triggered and to allow specific actions and responses to be taken.

“The permanent secretary and the minister of finance has already made some approaches in indicating to CCRIF  which is the Caribbean Catastrophic Risk Insurance  Programme to trigger off the response mechanism. I believe  we are likely to benefit from an allocation  of three point two million US dollars as a response to the disaster which has taken place here.”

Prime Minister King also took the opportunity to mention that the French government  has agreed to loan the country a helicopter which would aid in the search and rescue operations for missing Saint Lucians who may be trapped by landslides or other impediments due to the passage of  hurricane Tomas.

Mr. King further pointed out that a regional company has also agreed to loan Saint Lucia tractors and heavy equipment to clear the road from the effects of the landslides caused by hurricane Tomas.   In addition several government agencies are on the ground conducting assessments.
