French overseas departments contribute to recovery effort

Tuesday, November 17, 2010 –  The government of Saint Lucia has welcomed with tremendous gratitude a pledge of two hundred and forty thousand Euros from the French Overseas Departments of the Americas towards the country’s recovery effort from hurricane Tomas.

In addition to the pledged funds, Martinque, Guadeloupe and French Guyana have donated tonnes of relief supplies which include: food and building materials.

Saint Lucia`s Council General to the French Overseas Departments of the Americas Mr Keats Compton says since the passage of hurricane Tomas, the French have and will continue to support the government and people of Saint Lucia.

“I really cannot keep up with the amount of drinking water that has been donated to Saint Lucia. There was a delegation that went to the south of the island and they brought ten tonnes of equipment on a boat.  Right now the French have sent fifteen technical people to support the rehabilitation of the water sector. The presidents of Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guyana, have all committed to donating twenty thousand Euros each to the recovery efforts and I am still compiling a list of our requirements for infrastructural repairs as requested by our French counterparts.

The presidents of the Regional Councils’ of Martinique and Guadeloupe visited Saint Lucia this past Sunday (November 14) to meet with the prime minister  to explore other avenues by which further assistance can be  provided to Saint Lucia.

The delegation also toured several of the affected communities, including Marc.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King says the support from our French neighbours indicates the depth of the long-standing relationship between Saint Lucia and the French Territories.

The Union of French Antilles has also pledged to use all avenues to champion support for Saint Lucia’s recovery efforts.

The pledge of two hundred and forty thousand Euros is separate from the assistance being provided by the French Federation.
