Taiwanese funding earmarked for multi-million national tennis centre

Friday, February 26, 2010 The coming weeks will mark the ground breaking for a state- of- the -art national tennis centre at the Beausejour Cricket Ground. The announcement was made by sports minister Hon. Lenard Spider Montoute, during the 2009/2010 National Sports Award.

 

The sports minister said the facility the national tennis centre will not only provide a new facility where Saint Lucia will be able to host international tennis, but will also serve to bring tennis to the grass roots sector of the island.

 

This multi-million dollar tennis centre, will boast at least six court facilities, and is being fully financed by the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan through its loyal embassy,” the minister revealed.

“I wish to place on record on behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Ambassador Tom Chou and his staff of the embassy. His Excellency Ambassador Chou has really been a driving force and great facilitator for this very important new initiative.

 

Meanwhile, major upgrades are being undertaken on sporting facilities on the island in preparation for international as well as local sporting events. In preparation for the 20/20 2010 ICC World Cup, major infrastructural works are ongoing at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, the Gros-Islet Playing Field, and Mindoo Phillip Park.  

 

Improvements are also being done to the Philip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, and the Marchand Playing Field in time for the upcoming school sports.

“With all of these developments mentioned and more, we can optimistically look to the immediate future with hope and enthusiasm. We are well poised to host in the very near future, another world class event when we stage some of the matches as well as the semi -final of the ICC 20/20, 2010 Cricket World Cup at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, between April and May of this year.

 

Mr. Montoute called on all citizens Saint Lucians to play their role in ensuring that Saint Lucia is an excellent host and that the island stages a very successful event.
