Wednesday, February 3, 2010 – Uniting to celebrate the achievements, traditions, splendour, funniest, and all that is Saint Lucian, will be the focus of Saint Lucia's thirty-first anniversary of Independence from February 3 to the 23.

The official calendar of events for Independence 2010 was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, with emphasis on a truly national and united celebration.

This year's observance will be held under the theme “Tout Sentlisyen Se Yonn”.

Chairman of the Independence Committee, Senator Honourable Gaspard Charlemagne,  says the thirty-first anniversary of Saint Lucia's Independence is designed to highlight the best of Saint Lucia and encourage national pride.

“The Independence committee wishes to ensure that we have participation at the community level. For too long, people have been given the impression that once activities are held in the capital then that's good enough. We want to give the people in the rural communities an opportunity to participate, so that they don't have any reason to criticise; therefore the town and village councils have a major role to play,” Charlemagne said.

As part of the observance of Independence, all communities will be beautified in national colours and décor.

Senator Charlemagne says tremendous emphasis is being placed on involving the youth in all Independence activities, in keeping with government's commitment to supporting the youth.

“Firstly, we have the ministry of education responsible for the celebrations; we have ensured that all schools are involved in the celebrations we are also ensuring the involvement of youth at the community level.”

The National Schools’ Rally scheduled for 18th of February, remains one of the highlights of the Independence celebrations.

Other activities include cultural folk nights, school quizzes, the national dress festival, calypso 31 for Haiti, and the annual Independence parade on the morning of 22nd of February, to be followed by a cultural extravaganza in Castries.

There will also be several radio and television discussions on Independence.

Senator Charlemagne has promised that the Independence Committee will deliver a quality thirty-first anniversary celebration.
