Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Residents of the town of Gros-Islet and its environs, are the proud beneficiaries of a newly restored recreation park.  The Ignatius ‘Yorke’ Felecien Park, named after a former chairman of the Gros-Islet Town Council, was officially handed over to the community last Sunday.

Chairman of the Gros-Islet Town Council Ainsley Fontenelle, says the park is not just a beautification project, but a facility designed to bring people together and encourage family bonding.

“It is a place for visitors also to experience the warmth of the residents of all the people of the constituency. I think we should take special pride in social facilities like this one, because it is a place where people from all walks of life can meet and talk about the good things in life.”

Member of Parliament of Gros-Islet Hon. Lenard Spider Montoute, says the refurbished park is indicative of the importance that has been placed on the provision of quality living for residents. He says he fully endorses the decision to name the park after one whose contribution to the northern town remains invaluable.

“We have to recognize that we are building on the foundation that was set by those before us.  Those who are to come must continue that building process so that we can advance. You do not destroy what was set before your time, you have to enhance it and build upon it.”

The project was funded by the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund under the HOPE project, and was executed by the Gros-Islet Town Council in collaboration with the National Conservation Authority.
