Wednesday, April 21, 2010 Health Minister Hon. Dr. Keith Mondesir has outlined his ministry’s plans and programmes for the advancement of health care, with an EC128.9 million dollar budget allocation. During his contribution to the 2010/ 2111 budget debate on Wednesday, Dr. Mondesir said increased focus will be placed on primary health care, adding that significant achievements were recorded during the last fiscal year.

Dr. Mondesir said the ministry of health has recognized the need to step up every aspect of the health system.

“The ministry of health has made great strides working towards improving access to quality health care to all Saint Lucians. While there may be challenges, the health sector is moving along a path which will make health care universally acceptable, madam speaker. The national vision for health, is focusing on ensuring the right to every citizen of Saint Lucia, the highest attainable level of health care, but also to generate and sustain growth in the health and related sectors.”

Dr. Mondesir said the ministry’s primary health care approach is based on a model of solidarity, equality and ethics.  He says primary health care is paramount in saving cost, especially for small nations like Saint Lucia where finance is limited.
