Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Law enforcement in the fishing village of Anse La Raye along with community leaders have take a proactive step towards addressing juvenile delinquency and in the west coast community.

Destined to realise positive change in their community the Anse La Raye residents joined forces with the police on Tuesday at a workshop designed to develop programmes and strategies to deal with incident of juvenile delinquency and other social ills affecting the community.

The issue of children being exposed to alcohol at the popular “Anse La Raye Fish Friday” and other social gatherings was also high on the agenda.

Home Affairs Minister Senator Honourable Guy Mayers commended the police and the residents for initiating the process of change in their community.

“We have to protect our children. We cannot have children below the age of twelve out on the street at wee hours of the morning intoxicated and engaged in deviant behaviour. We must find a way to address this problem and to protect the children. I believe that the police working with community leaders is the way to go.”

Tuesday's workshop was held under the theme “The Children – Our Future”.

Parliamentary Representative for Anse La Raye Honourable Dr Keith Mondesir, says the initiative epitomises the true role and importance of community policing.

“Statistics indicate that both the Scotland Yard and the FBI, say fifty percent of the cases they solve is done through community tips and this is no different for us here in Saint Lucia, particularly in the small communities like Anse La Raye. I want to place on record special commendations to the police in Anse La Raye for this initiative which should be continued from here in every single hamlet, community, town and village. The police, along with community leaders should come together and do exactly what we are doing here—get the residents involved in what's happening in their communities.”

Dr Mondesir has expressed confidence that residents of the fishing village will be positively impacted by the programmes developed from the workshop.

The residents and the police plan to host regular community meetings to constantly develop sustainable strategies to make Anse La Raye a better community.
