Wednesday, April 7, 2010) A third Taiwanese delegation of six medical and nursing volunteers led by Dr. HUANG, Yee-wen, and Coordinator Dr. Nina KAO is scheduled to arrive in Saint Lucia on Saturday, 10th April, 2010 to continue service work at St. Jude Hospital for a period of three weeks, with an aim to alleviate the Hospital staff’s workload resulting from serious manpower shortage.  This is the second joint effort project in 2010 between the governments of Saint Lucia and the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the area of health and medical cooperation conducted by St. Jude Hospital and its twin hospital in Taiwan, the Changhua Christian Hospital.

This delegation is composed of four doctors and two nurses, of which one is the director of the Orthopedics department.  Their details are as follows:

1. Dr. Hsiao-tsu LIN              Obs/Gyn                                            Male

2. Dr. Ing-lin CHANG           Orthopedics/ER                                  Male

3. Dr. Kuan-ju LAI                Internal Medicine                                Female

4. Dr. Wan-nien YU               ENT                                                   Male

5. Ms Chuan-chuan YANG    Emergency Nurse                               Female

6. Ms Chen-chen HU             Operation Room Nurse                      Female

St. Jude Hospital signed an Agreement of Twinning with the Changhua Christian Hospital on 8th July, 2009.  The Changhua Christian Hospital in central Taiwan is a 1600 beds medical center and teaching hospital, employing over 3,800 people and receiving approximately 5,000 patient-visits daily. According to the Agreement, both medical institutions agree to undertake a comprehensive exchange of information on the health sector, provision of international volunteers and to facilitate the increase in knowledge of health care professionals through the conduct of seminars and professional training and exchanges of staff on the basis of equality and reciprocity.  Since then, two groups of seven members of the medical, nursing and technical staff from St. Jude Hospital have finished three-month intensive training programmes at the Changhua Christian Hospital in Taiwan.  Both training programmes serve as essential measures for the capacity-building of St. Jude Hospital.  Initiatives of further training will be proposed and discussed in the next couple of months.

Based on the same Agreement, the Changhua Christian Hospital pledges to send volunteers to serve at St. Jude Hospital.  The first delegation of Taiwanese volunteers offered their service to St. Jude Hospital’s patients from 21st November to 12th December, 2009, and the second delegation offered their service from 16th January to 5th February , 2010. Members of both delegations returned to Taiwan with gratitude for the assistance and hospitality they had received from the staff of St. Jude Hospital in general and the working experiences they had acquired during their service which broadened their vision and knowledge and would surely have tremendous impact on their future careers.

Besides training programmes, Changhua Christian Hospital also provides medical equipments to St. Jude Hospital. Based on the reports of the previous medical volunteers, Changhua Christian Hospital donated equipments to St. Jude Hospital, such as Caesarean Section Vacuum (to facilitate the delivery for obstetricians). On this visit, a Pulse Oximeter (a medical device that indirectly measures the oxygen saturation of a patient’s blood) will be provided.

Following the successful model between St. Jude Hospital and Changhua Christian Hospital, the Milton Kato Memorial Hospital in St Vincent and Grenadines would like to initiate exchange programmes with Changhua Christian Hospital, both hospitals will exchange views during this visit.

This new model of international cooperation focusing on training and volunteer in the field of medical and health scopes has won commendation from both the governments of Saint Lucia and the Republic of China (Taiwan) and their peoples alike.
