Wednesday September 30, 2009 – Saint Lucia is poised to participate in the observance of World Sight Day with the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association playing the lead role in the observance.

Manager of Eye Care Saint Lucia and Vision 20/20 Coordinator of Saint Lucia, Emma Bernard Joseph, says this year, there is a focus on women with vision loss.

“This year the theme is: “Gender and eye health, equal access to care”. The theme focuses on vision loss, especially for those living in developing countries. According to World Health Organization, nearly two-thirds of the world's blind are women and girls. We have a lot to do to change the attitudes of people about the importance of regular eye checks.”

This efforts says Bernard -Joseph, must be doubled in the case of girls and women.

“'Our main activity this year will be visits to the home for the elderly. Now we know that at those homes the majority of persons there are women and that was one of the reasons we though of this activity so that we can reach the elderly women but we are also trying to get the younger women because we know that as home owners they concentrate sometimes more on the husbands and the children themselves.”

World Sight day will be observed next on October 8.
