Wednesday September 30, 2009 – Tourism Minister Senator Allen Chastanet, has been speaking out on the substantial economic spin-offs, to be derived from hosting the 16th Florida Caribbean Cruise Association Cruise Conference and Trade Show, from October 26-30.

The Tourism Minister says, the economic impact of having eleven hundred people here during a recessionary year is huge. He says the cruise conference and trade show, is an opportunity for many of the participants who are coming for the first time to know the island and interface with the community.

“They are paying their own way. They are staying here for a total of five nights staying at hotels, paying for their own transportation and going out to party. There is a direct economic impact there. Cotton Bay says the bookings they have received has allowed them to meet their October budget.

While here, cruise executives will engage in several discussion for on a number of pertinent issues related to the cruise sector.

Whilst the event is carded to end on Thursday, the following morning 35 of the cruise executives will go with members of Cabinet on a boat ride trip to the community of Soufriere.

The Tourism Minister says, he is confident that the cruise industry will continue to experience growth. He says the executives who will be here for the event, “are responsible for the decision making for 90% of the cruise companies in the world.”

Senator Chastanet says, by hosting the event, Saint Lucia will be sending a very strong signal to the international community, that it is serious about growing the cruise industry.
