Monday, November 30, 2009 – The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) says Saint Lucians can look forward to the re-establishment an annual National Arts Festival and National Arts Awards Programme in 2010.
The announcement was made by the Executive Director of the CDF, Mr. Kennedy “Boots” Samuel, at the official launch of the 2010 National Arts Festival and National Arts Awards Programme on Saturday evening at the Cultural Centre.
Mr. Samuel says the programme signals the commencement of a year of rejuvenation of the arts in Saint Lucia.
“For the last few months we have been preparing to implement something that has been in demand for a long time, our national arts awards on an annual basis and the intention is to put that in place in 2010 together with a national arts festival.”
Citizens are invited to support the visual arts exhibition at the Cultural Centre where the work of many Saint Lucian artistes and artisans are on display until Saturday.
Speaking at Saturday’s event, local poet, play writer and actor, Mr Mc Donald Dixon emphasised the need for a national theatre to stimulate the production of the arts in Saint Lucia.
“What we need is a dedicated plan at this time designed to serve the arts—one that covers development and all the recurring scenarios which manifest as logistical nightmares whenever we contemplate productions,” Dixon said.
The official launch of the 2010 National Arts and Cultural Festival was held under the distinguish patronage of Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy.
The festival will feature a week of activities to celebrate Saint Lucia's Arts and Culture.
The activities end on Sunday with the Festival of Carols on Sunday December 6, 2009, at the St. Peters Catholic Church in Dennery. |
