Wednesday,  November 4, 2009  Health Minister Hon. Dr. Keith Mondesir, has emphasized the need for Saint Lucians to take personal responsibility for their health. Dr. Mondesir said, while government will continue to provide the relevant assistance, nothing beats personal responsibility.

“We want to let citizens know that we have a problem. We have a high rate of diabetes, a high rate of hypertensive and the number of cancer cases is growing. We cannot prevent illnesses, but we can slow it down by taking the necessary precaution—the necessary actions in terms of nutrition. Even diabetics can live normal lives if they make a concerted effort to take care of themselves.”

Dr. Mondesir lamented the high number of amputations among diabetics.  He said government is spending an exorbitant amount of money on health care, especially in the treatment of cases of diabetes and kidney failure, which are increasing.
