Thursday, November 12, 2009 – The government of Saint Lucia continues to make strides towards the reformation of the health sector.

This week, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with various local organisations signed contracts, signalling the start of renovations of the Babonneau Health Centre.

Parliamentary Representative for Babonneau, Honourable Ezechiel Joseph, says the finished facility will greatly enhance the quality of health care for residents of the constituency.

“To me, the first level of comfort in rehabilitation is the comfort of the patients. The Ministry of Health has tried to see what can be done and to at least make some changes to these health centres, so as to accommodate persons in an environment that is conducive, until they see a doctor.”

Minister for Health and Wellness Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir, says government has made significant administrative changes at health centres island wide.

“Instead of doctors being here for 3 or 4 hours, they are are now sitting in the health centres for the entire day. We have signed contracts with doctors that enable them to remain in our health centres not on a part time basis, as occurred in the past, but full time, so that they can serve the people in the best possible manner.”

The renovation of the Babonneau Health Centre will be completed at a cost of two million EC dollars. Similar works are to commence on the La Guerre Health Centre soon.
