Wednesday, November 4, 2009 – The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands Fisheries and Forestry, has lent assistance to the students of the Saint Aloysius RC Boys School, in establishing the infrastructure for its backyard gardening project.
Agricultural Officer Vernet James, says this is part of the ministry’s continuing efforts at promoting food security and domestic agriculture.
“We would like to see gardens established and maintained in the schools—especially the primary schools. We know the problem that they face with the school feeding programme, and the lack of knowledge and experience those young children go through not having the exposure to agriculture,” James said.
Deputy Principal of the Saint Aloysius RC Boys School, Paul Desir, says it has always been the philosophy of the school to promote domestic agriculture.
“We are hoping that the students who have learnt certain skills, will be in a position to pass on those skills to students of the school, and by extension the home, and who knows in the future, we may see some of them developing as agriculturists in Saint Lucia,” Desir remarked.
The Ministry of Agriculture is also promoting backyard gardening to encourage healthier lifestyles in Saint Lucia. |
