Wednesday,  March 18, 2009 –  The New Beginnings Children’s Transit Home is moving ever closer to realising  its  official opening   within the next few months. Recently the brand new institution was able to procure some $100,000 .00 worth of state funding, for the procurement of furniture to make the environment safe and comfortable for the young occupants that will be housed there.

Family case worker with responsibility for developing the Home, Angelina Muhammed, said so far she is pleased to announce that the Transit Home which falls under the Ministry of Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations is now fully furnished.

“To date we’ve been very fortunate in being able to purchase furniture and equipment for the house that will accommodate the children and young people who are on the waiting list.  We have made purchases from several of our local suppliers in Saint Lucia. The Church of Latter Day Saints donated a fridge and cooker for the home, but by and large government has responded positively to the needs of the Transit Home.”

Ms. Muhammed said, the business places were very accommodating, providing discounts in most cases. The next two significant outstanding matters concern staffing and the completion of the Therapeutic Centre.

“I am very pleased to say   the construction of the therapeutic centre is going wonderfully. At the moment we are awaiting for staff to be appointed to positions in the home and we are hoping that that can happen relatively soon. It’s just some minor details that need to be sorted out within the ministry and once that’s done, we will be aware of what will be taking place.”

There are a reportedly 49 prospective children already on the waiting list for the Transit Home, more than twice over its stated capacity of the 21 occupants.
