Thursday, March 19, 2009 – The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) is preparing to execute a ministerial consultation on a National Policy for Persons with Disabilities which will pave the way for the integration of persons with disabilities into mainstream society.
Executive Director of the Council, Lancia Isidore, noted that the consultation scheduled for April, is expected to generate discussion on the policy, and garner governmental support.
“When we view the significance of such persons we should not exclude them from society because they are of relevance and we need to reach out to them as well. We would need to make them—government officials—aware of the significance of that policy with regards to persons with disabilities in our society,” Isidore noted.
Isidore said substantial effort has gone into getting the draft national policy for persons with disabilities document to its current stage, and with the support of government and civil society, the policy should be enacted by the end of 2009. |
