Wednesday, June 3, 2009 In December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 23rd  as United Nations’ Public Service Day.    This year, Saint Lucia will join the United Nations in observance this day, as the Government seeks to give greater recognition to the significant role played by Public Servants.

This day was established to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process, recognize the work of Public Servants and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

In preparation to this year’s observance a committee was established to plan a week of activities.  The theme for this year is “Developing an Excellent Public Service - Your Responsibility, My Responsibility”.  In developing this theme the Committee sought to embrace the public as well as encourage responsible behaviour by individual Public Servants.

This inaugural observance is limited to budget friendly activities.  A more elaborate celebration will however be planned for 2010.

Activities planned for this year’s observance are:

  1. Televised remarks by Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy - Governor General, the Honourable  Stephenson King - Prime Minister and the Honourable Lenard Montoute, Minister for the Public Service; and
  2. Open Day featuring mini exhibitions to highlight the functions of each Ministry/Department at their respective locations. The public will be invited to view the various displays.
