Tuesday,  July 21, 2009 –  Nine young Saint Lucians have been given opportunities to pursue their educational dreams as recipients of scholarships from the Taiwanese government and ICDF.

The recipients were selected from over seventy applicants and will conduct studies in a wide range of fields including Media and International Relations.

Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Tom Chou, says  the annual scholarships are in keeping with the a promise from the government of Taiwan to assist with developing the people of Saint Lucia..

“After completing their education in Taiwan, these students will be very valuable assets for the economic and social development of Saint Lucia, so I congratulate the recipients for attaining the scholarships and I have no doubt in my mind that they will do well in Taiwan.”

The scholarship are the fruits of the diplomatic relationship established between Taiwan and Saint Lucia in 2006.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dr. Rufina Frederick, says the government of Saint Lucia views the annual scholarships as an invaluable opportunity to increase the competitiveness of its citizens.

“So we take this opportunity on behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia to express our sincere gratitude t the Taiwanese government for the provision of theses scholarships. We assure you that our recipients to unleash their potential at a higher level and it is our expectation that the scholarship recipients will return home upon completion of their studies to make a difference in our small nations,” said Dr. Frederick.

This year more young men received scholarships; females dominated the programme in the past.
