Sports for Life IT Centre named in honour of cricketing hero

Friday, April 3, 2009 – Disadvantaged youth will find a constructive path to learning and development at the “Mindoo” Phillip Sports for Life Information Technology Centre, earmarked for the Beausejour Cricket Grounds.
The centre, named in honour of Saint Lucia’s cricketing hero the late Francis “Mindoo” Phillip, will cater for children ages ten to sixteen, and is registered as a not-for-profit organization.
The youth oriented project, funded by the British High Commission, was launched ahead of the final One Day International between England and West Indies. British High Commissioner Karl Burrows, said his government is happy to be actively contributing to the community.
“It’s a wonderful concept, learning through sport and using the power of sport to change lives of young people; simple but very effective. I want to congratulate the Sports for Life team for their energy and commitment and for securing corporate sponsorship for the project to ensure its sustainability. Congratulations also to the government of Saint Lucia. They have recognized the project’s potential and have given it their full backing,” said the British diplomat.
The late Francis “Mindoo” Phillip’s widow Helen Phillip, said her husband believed in of sports as a vehicle to transform the lives of disadvantaged youth.
“I thank the organization for this accolade, which he richly deserves. I want to say to the organizers of Sports for Life and the Government of Saint Lucia, that this effort to recognize my husband is indeed special,” she said.
The Centre will be equipped with ten computers, printer and interactive whiteboard. Children will utilize these facilities for three-hour sessions of learning and cricket coaching, on Saturdays. |
