Tuesday,  September 30, 2008 –  Members of the public are hereby informed that the sea turtle fishery is in effect from October 1st  2008 to December 31st  2008, both days inclusive.

 

However, fishers, enforcement agencies and the general public are also reminded that during the fishery and throughout the year, it is illegal to:

  • interfere with a sea turtle nest, nesting sea turtle or its eggs

  • have, take, buy, sell or consume sea turtle eggs

  • leave or attempt to leave the country with, or export sea turtle eggs, meat or other sea turtle products fish for or attempt to fish for sea turtles within 100 metres of the shore

  • hold a sea turtle as a pet

Contravention of the Fisheries Regulations No. 9 of 1994 is subject to a maximum fine of $5000 for each offence.
