Thursday, June 26, 2008 – The Vieux-Fort Council of and for Persons with Disabilities is this year celebrating 25 years as an established organization looking after the welfare of persons with disabilities in the southern end of the island.
This anniversary is being marked by a week-long programme of activities, which commenced with a church service on Sunday June 22nd. One of the week's activity include a dollar-day funding raising, which according to Council member Steven Edmunds, will be undertaken by soliciting the financial support of persons within the community, towards the welfare of those most in need.
“The monies generated from fundraising events go directly to persons with disabilities, to help in education, health and several other areas. Some persons think that because you have a disability, you should be staying at your home. I think this kind of stigma, attitude and feelings should be obliterated as quickly as possible. We live in a day of information, knowledge and education, and therefore we should be able to recognize people as whom they are, not the disability first,” Edmunds said.
Some of the activities outlined by Edmunds include a care-givers workshop scheduled for June 26th, at the Spartan Medical School, a craft exhibition, free blood screening and visits to various shut-ins. “The celebrations are not only for persons for disabilities, but the entire Saint Lucian community,” Edmunds added.
The week of activities will culminate on Sunday June 28th with a fun day at Beanefield, Vieux-Fort. Edmunds said the Council, which is part of the umbrella organization the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities, has recorded significant achievements, notwithstanding its many challenges over the years. |
