Friday, February 29, 2008 – Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will pay a one-day visit to Saint Lucia on Friday, March 7, 2008 as part of a four-nation tour of the Caribbean. The programme of activities - which has been drawn up for their visit, the Prince’s third to Saint Lucia – focus on issues of mutual interest to Saint Lucia and the Prince of Wales: environmental issues, corporate responsibility and helping young people fulfil their talent and potential, however challenging their background.
The areas which will receive special attention are sustainable development, responsible stewardship of our natural resources, global co-operation to protect our environmental heritage, responsible business practices that enable the private sector to make its impact on society as positive and productive as possible, while gaining tangible business benefits and helping young people achieve their full potential through self-employment or overcoming barriers to transform their lives.
Their Royal Highnesses’ visit will begin in Soufriere which hosted the Queen’s first visit to Saint Lucia in 1966. The programme there envisages a cultural performance by schools and community groups, a tour of the Fond Doux Estate and Plantation Resort, and the Rabot Estate, the home of Hotel Chocolat. His Royal Highness will also hold discussions with stakeholders of the sustainable eco-tourism sector, an area in which he has shown great interest and leadership both in terms of the built and natural environments.
From Soufriere Their Royal Highnesses will travel to Castries to hold discussions with the Prime Minister and other officials on issues of crime and national security. In Castries, he will also be launching two programmes which bear strong similarities with two of his own Projects in the United Kingdom namely:
A Reception at Government House has also been planned at which His Royal Highness will present members of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with their Gold Awards.
Their Royal Highnesses will leave Saint Lucia in the late afternoon for the next leg of their tour – the island of Montserrat. |
