Tuesday, 12 February 2008 – A grand package of 19 special events will be served up for national consumption in observance of the nation's 29th Anniversary of Independence, under the theme: Progressing in face of Global Challenges.

The activities were announced at a press conference of the Independence Standing Committee this week at the GIS Studios.  Minister in the Ministry of Education and Culture Senator the Honourable Gaspard Charlemagne, who is also Chairman of that Committee, invited the full participation of the public, calling especially for support to be also given to the four new events added to this year's programme.

“The new events are: the launching of a Plus Belle Village competition; the Arts and Culture Showcase, which is also referred to as Creative Vibes; the Saint Lucia Music awards and national Colours Day,” said Senator Charlemagne.

The revival of the Plus Belle village Competition is expected to give Communities around the island fresh incentive to uplift the physical beauty and cleanliness of their surroundings.

Senior Cultural Development Officer Gandolph St. Clair said the competition will be coordinated by a special committee to be announced soon.

“It’s about embracing your community and enhancing it, not only in the physical structure but in cultural development. So Choiseul having basketry and handicraft might be able to host an exhibition during the week of Independence, and so you have an interchange of ideas coming out of the different communities,” he explained. “A community will have to be set up embracing of course the tourism profile with the Saint Lucia Tourist Broad, which is very interested in community tourism.”

The Plus Belle Village Competition will be launched at the Schools Rally on February 22nd—Independence Day.  Other activities for this year’s celebrations include the usual National Independence Sports Awards, National Schools’ Rally, Concert of Praise and Inspiration, National Independence Day Parade and the Investiture ceremony.
