Blue road markings signifying parking for the disabled

Blue road markings signifying parking for the disabled

Tuesday, February 5, 2008 – The Transport Department and the Council for and of Persons with Disabilities have embarked on an initiative that seeks to provide parking spaces for handicapped persons within the city of Castries and eventually within the Town of Vieux Fort.

Chief Transport Officer Annette Augustine said the initiative is in recognition of the fact that several disabled persons own vehicles on the island. “These people need to get access to parking without hassle,”  she said.

“There are few spaces which have been designated for handicapped persons only. These spaces will be demarcated through the use of the blue paint markings including the universal symbol for the handicapped,” said the transport department official.

The Ministry of Transport with the help of the Council for and of Persons with Disabilities, Miss Augustine said, will soon be distributing permits to disabled persons to ensure their have full utility of the spaces.

“We are encouraging individuals out there with disabilities and who use motor vehicles regularly—whether they drive themselves or are being driven—to contact the council to give information regarding their vehicle numbers,” she said.

This information, she said, will then be forwarded to the Transport Department for further processing and distribution of the respective permits.
