Tuesday,  December 9, 2008 - WIBDECO, in collaboration with AGIL, a Germany based organization executing an EU funded development project in St. Lucia has organized a two-day workshop on Prospects and Opportunities for Marketing of Selected Agricultural Produce.    Scheduled for the 10th and 11th of December, 2008, the event will be held at the Bay Gardens Beach Resort, Dolphin Conference Room in St. Lucia.

This activity is part of WIBDECO’s wider strategy of encouraging farmers to think beyond bananas and to stimulate production of other selected produce for the external market.

The workshop will complement initiatives already started by the ministries of agriculture and marketing entities in each of the Windward Islands.  It will highlight opportunities for ensuring that farmers with the potential to supply sufficient quantities of good quality products as required for the export market seize such opportunities.   Participants will also be informed of the role that WIBDECO expects to play in the production and marketing of non-banana crops regionally and internationally.

The workshop is for farmers and persons in the Windward Islands who are working in the agricultural sector and are involved primarily in commercial production of non-traditional crops.

During the two days, participants will review and discuss the major constraints to the commercial production of economically viable crops in the Windward Islands and identify means for enhancing agricultural diversification and opening business opportunities for rural communities and the farming population.
