Tuesday,  December 16, 2008 –  Minister responsible for Youth and Sports and Parliamentary Representative for Gros-Islet, Honourable Lenard Spider Montoute has made a pitch for the revival of a vibrant youth and sports council for the district.

The minister’s comments came while he addressed a prize giving ceremony of the Gros-Islet Football League following the completion  of the district representative football competition.

“We must ensure that  we have  a  governing body  for sports by  setting up a sports council in Gros-Islet as we had it before to bring sports in  Gros-Islet back to  the level  that it used to be.  Once again  we can begin  to produce  outstanding sportsmen and women; we can begin to  produce  strong competitive  representative  teams  and that we will have a  football competition of a high standard,” Minister Montoute noted.

Montoute added: “This is an opportunity  for us to take stock and examine where we are in terms of sports in general in Gros-Islet and to make efforts  required  so that next year the standard of sports in general, and football in particular, will be on a much higher plain.”

Super J Northern United All Stars emerged champions of the competition and also dominated with their presence at the awards ceremony. The turn-out by other teams was disappointing and noted by Minister Montoute.

“ I want to compliment Northern United All Stars, not only  for having won the tournament but for the level of discipline and organisation the club has demonstrated. I urge the other clubs to take a page from their example.  I say to the other clubs  that it is no accident  that Super J  Northern United All Stars is the dominant football club in Gros-Islet, ” Minister Montoute suggested.

Northern United received EC$ 4,000 for their winning effort and the minister wished them well when the time comes for them to represent the district in national football competitions. He also urged the other competing teams in the league to ensure that they became  properly structured clubs.
