Friday April 18, 2008 –  More educational opportunities for all Saint Lucians is the focus of the Estimates of Expenditure 2008/2009, to be presented by Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King, who will make that pronouncement come Monday, April 21, 2008.

Minister King in an exclusive interview with the GIS, believes that the only way forward for any nation is to equip and educate its best resources – its people.

The theme of the Budget “Moving forward, presenting opportunities to our people in education, as they prepare themselves to be partners in the economic development and advancement of our communities, rather than mere spectators or subservient  in this region.”  is in-keeping with moves to  develop the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC), into another site for the University of the West Indies,  in the coming months.   Already, the government of Saint Lucia has received a commitment of three hundred thousand US dollars to undertake a feasibility study geared towards transforming the tertiary level institution.

“My vision for the nation Saint Lucia, is a nation of proud nationals who are engaged in the operations and management of the country in a way that will be an example to other countries,” the prime minister said.

According to the prime minister, the private sector too, will have to play its part, through a number of development projects  including the oil refinery to be established by Hess.   If the refinery becomes a reality, there will be a major injection of capital in the country through infrastructure development and ancillary services.
