Friday,  November 2, 2007 –  The Organization of Eastern Caribbean  States (OECS) Secretariat and the United States of America  have signed  an agreement  aimed at enhancing  the protection of  the region's environment .

This, via  a project  entitled 'Protecting  the Eastern Caribbean Region's Biodiversity.'

A two million US dollar contribution  was also made to the project which  will take off next year. An official from the Saint Lucia based Secretariat, Mr. Francis Burnette  signed on behalf of the OECS member states.

Mr. Burnette explained that the initiative  targets areas which are closely linked to the priorities of the OECS and it supports critical ongoing activities such as  the harmonization of  national and regional institutional policy and legal frameworks relevant to biodiversity conservation.

United States  Ambassador to the OECS Mary Ourisman signed the agreement on behalf of  the US government.

According to US Ambassador to the OECS, public understanding  and private  sector involvement are key elements  to the successful protection of these sensitive environment issues and noted that she was pleased to see that this project which the OECS will undertake with US support, will focus on environmental themes.
