Friday,  November 2, 2007 –  The  commitment  of the Babonneau Farmers  Fair Trade Cooperative  landed the banana farmers organization its fair share of commendation from Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Arsene James and Parliamentary Representative for the community and Minister for Agriculture  Honourable Ezikel Joseph when they officially presented a computer and printer to the Boguis Combined School  in Babonneau.

Minister James said Fair Trade's contribution to education  has been outstanding. The organization also provided two scholarships to  students, one at the secondary level  and  the other a student of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.

“First of all, let me thank the Fair Trade Cooperative of Babonneau for the efforts they have made in helping the  schools within the Babonneau area. We must praise them for the effort  and we must praise them because they are thinking about young persons in the community.  And when you think of the young persons in the community, you are thinking of the leaders of tomorrow.”

The Minister says the Ministry of Education is responsible for  a total of 105 schools around the  island, and as such    gestures by individual groups is a very welcomed  intervention.

The National Fair Trade Association has also undertaken projects  in other schools all meant to touch the lives of students in a meaningful way. Member of  Parliament for Babonneau Honourable Ezikel Joseph   underscored the importance of computer literacy. For his part he promised to source more computers, for the school.

“You have  an opportunity to be exposed to that technology from a very  young age. I know, speaking with your principal  that one is not enough, but one is a commencement. And I want to make a commitment here today that I  will do all in my power, based on the discussion I had with your principal to see if we can get more computers in this school.”
