Wednesday, March 21, 2007 – Small business persons from across the island who have been selected to benefit from grant funding under the National Development Corporation’s Micro Business Fund project, commenced specialized training on Thursday, March 22nd. The 20 prospective recipients will form the first batch of an estimated forty (40) persons who will receive grant assistance as part of the initiative. The training focuses on small business management.

The training which is fully funded by the NDC is being conducted by the James Belgrave Enterprise Development Fund at its Leslie Land-based training centre. According to the Corporation's Communications and Special Events Officer, John Emmanuel, the two-day course is one of the major prerequisites for applicants receiving funding. “Disbursement of funds to suppliers will commence once training is completed, and that is critical. We must emphasise the fact that the funds are not handed to the awardees in their hands, the funds go to the supplier on behalf of the awardee,” Emmanuel added.

The Micro Business Fund project was launched in September 2006, and makes available EC$250,000.00 to persons who wish to engage in micro business ventures, up to a maximum grant of $10,000.00 per project.

The initiative is designed to inject much needed financial support into new and burgeoning micro enterprises across the country. Categories of business funded under the initiative include but are not inclusive to Service & Trade, Retail & Distribution, Manufacturing, Tourism and Agriculture related businesses.

The second group of awardees will commence training in the coming weeks.
