Friday, December 1, 2006 - Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony has confirmed that, as of today, the Government of Saint Lucia, through the Cabinet of Ministers, has renewed the popular concession on holiday gift barrels entering Saint Lucia from overseas for Christmas and the New Year.

Since taking office in 1997, the Government has every year removed certain taxes on barrels received at Customs & Excise ports of entry containing gift items sent here from relatives and friends abroad.

Under the Government’s concession, each household is allowed two barrels, each containing non-electronic gift items at a maximum value of EC $1,500 -- all of which must be for personal use and not for sale or other commercial use.

Barrels which qualify are exempted from Import Duty and Consumption Tax charges, with only the Service Charge and Environmental Levy are applied.

Consignees and those receiving the goods here are reminded that the barrels should not contain electronic items and if violations are traced, the full penalties would apply and all taxes would have to be paid as per normal.

The Prime Minister, who is also Minister of Finance, says this year’s ninth consecutive annual concession on holiday barrels begins today (December 1, 2006) and will continue until January 15, 2007.
