Monday, April 3, 2006 – The National Stadium in Vieux Fort came to on Friday March 31st with the successful staging of the 2006 Inter-Secondary Schools Athletic Championships. The sports meet which is the premier event on the annual calendar of schools' sports was held among 19 secondary schools and three senior primary schools.

Addressing the large crowd ahead of the first athletic event, Minister for Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports Honourable Mario Michel expressed the hope that the championships would help in selecting a formidable national team.

“We will have some new records established and some new stars emerging out of this tournament to represent Saint Lucia in the Windward Islands Championships, which will take place right here in St. Lucia this year,” the minister said.

The Inter-Secondary Schools Athletic Championships was sponsored by the Bank of St. Lucia, to the tune of some EC $30,000. Senior Manager of Bank of St. Lucia Anderson Lake said supporting activities of this nature for the company is a national duty.

“As part of our responsibility to develop our nation, we are concentrating on three areas: supporting education and literacy-especially financial literacy, supporting youth development-particularly vocational and technical education and sports,” Mr. Lake said.

The Vieux-Fort Comprehensive School, which had the largest spectator support emerged winners of the championships receiving gold medals in many events and silver and bronze medals in several others. The Piaye Secondary, St. Joseph Convent, Saint Mary's College and Soufriere Comprehensive schools, were their major challengers.
