Friday, December 23, 2005 - His Excellency Hon. Dr Julian Robert Hunte (O.B.E. DLitt.) has been appointed as St. Lucia's non-resident Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Mr. Hunte, who is also the island's Permanent Representative at the United Nations, was today informed of a warrant signed by Her Excellency the Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, appointing him to his latest diplomatic posting.

A former President of the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Hunte recently visited China – which has a permanent seat on the UN Security Council -- during his term as head of the world's most important international governmental organisation.

During that visit, the St. Lucia Ambassador, who previously served as the island's Minister of External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation, met with top Chinese state, political and economic leaders.

Ambassador Hunte, who is based in New York and is currently home on holidays, learned today of his latest diplomatic appointment.

Earlier this year (in April), Ambassador Hunte accepted an offer to become the Patron of the St. Lucia-China Friendship Association.

Reacting to the news of his appointment, Ambassador Hunte said: “It is an honour for me to continue to serve the Government and People of St. Lucia.”

He said he looked forward to travelling to Beijing early in the new year, to present his credentials to the President of China.

Ambassador Hunte has promised “to work hard to promote closer ties between the People's Republic of China and St. Lucia.”
