Friday, November 26, 2004 - The National Authorizing Office of the European Development Fund has pledged to do all within its power to ensure that St. Lucia makes use of a new water facility developed by the European Union for African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP).

The project, which will assist ACP countries in dealing with their water and sanitation problems, is being by funded to the tune of some one billion Euros.

The demand driven facility allows government departments, non-state actors and even NGOs in St. Lucia and other ACP States to send in proposals in order to access funding for various initiatives aimed at solving their water problems.

St. Lucia will be in competition with 78 other ACP countries for funds under the facility.

More than just providing funds for better sanitation, the facility can also be utilized for the funding of water governance, policy and education, as well as for the effective management of water resources.

The new water facility is in keeping with millennium goals established at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. The summit sought to improve on people’s access to fresh water and basic sanitation around the world.
