Monday, June 14, 2004 – Minister of Physical Development, Environment and Housing, Honourable Ferguson John, has announced that a series of environmental awards would be presented next year, to individuals and organisations for their contribution to the environment.

This move is in keeping with the government’s thrust to transform every citizen into an advocate for the environment.

“My Ministry has recently begun work to develop criteria for a series of Environmental Awards, which will be presented as part of World Environment Day Celebrations in 2005. These awards will formally recognize significant achievements in the field of Environmental Management under several categories, including Media, Individual, Community Group, Non – Governmental Organizations and Private Sector”, Minister John said.

He explained that the awards were not only expected to assist in “highlighting some of our best practices and achievements of which we can be proud, but also in engendering greater environmental responsibility and stewardship by all Saint Lucians.”

Minister John also announced the Cabinet had recently adopted the National Coastal Zone Management Policy, which would set the platform for further improvements in the planning and development control within coastal areas, and that A draft National Environmental Policy and Management Strategy would be submitted to cabinet shortly. When adopted, it will form the basis for a more integrated approach to environmental management on the island, ensuring greater synergies between the agencies responsible for waste management.

The minister also announced that within the next few months, St. Lucia’s first State of the Environment Report would be published.
