Thursday, July 01, 2004 – St. Lucia’s twin peaks and its surroundings,
the Pitons Management Area located in Soufriere has been named a World Heritage
Site.
News of the piton’s listing came on Wednesday June 30th, 2004, amidst much
anticipation by the advisory committee, which was installed to ensure that the
area met the requirements of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Chairman of the advisory committee of the Piton Management Area Martin Satney,
explained that the pitons’ listing as a World Heritage Site came after the
UNESCO World Heritage Committee was satisfied that the site met specific
guidelines as a unique and exquisite natural beauty.
He said that the work of a lot of people, including the people of Soufriere and
Choiseul had finally borne fruit, through this achievement.
The Piton Management Area Advisory chairman said there is an unending plan of
action, which had been developed and would continue to be in effect to ensure
that the pitons do not lose their designation. Further, he said that the
achievement would bring about great benefit to the nation especially the people
of the west coast.
The pitons of St Lucia were designated along with seven other countries in a
long list of 48 sites up for inscription on UNESCO’s world heritage list of
outstanding cultural and natural sites, during the 28th session of UNESCO’s
World Heritage Committee in China.
Sites selected for world heritage listing are inscribed after carefully
assessing whether they represent the best example of cultural and natural
heritage. Through its listing as a world heritage site the pitons are protected
for future generations.
