Thursday, August 12, 2004 - The Ministry of Communication, Works, Transport and Public Utilities is preparing for rehabilitation work on the East Coast Road.

The East Coast Road is that stretch of road linking Castries to Vieux-Fort via Dennery. Minister for Communications Works, Transport and Public Utilities Honourable Felix Finisterre said that the road is littered with potholes and is an annoyance to motorist.

The road works will involve filling potholes and using a seal to cover the new works to prevent further deterioration. “This is only a temporary measure to ameliorate the intolerable conditions ahead of major works for the reconstruction of the road”, Mr. Finisterre said.

The Minister said that the kind of upgrading to take place on the East Coast Road was stressful on the ministry’s budget, which really should be going to the upkeep of community roads. But he pointed out that it was a necessary exercise at this time, as the complaints were becoming deafening and a source of frustration for all.

Presently, the Government of Saint Lucia is in the process of reconstructing and rehabilitating over 50 primary and tertiary roads on the island.
