Tuesday, April 20, 2004 – During the 2004/2005 fiscal year the government of St. Lucia will give precedence to Internal Security, one of the top three areas on its priority list during that period, with the other two being Youth and Health Care. In presenting the 2004 Throne Speech on Tuesday, April 20 on the occasion of the opening of the second session of the Eighth Parliament of St. Lucia, Governor General, Her Excellency, Dame Pearlette Louisy stated that internal security was the most vexing challenge for the government. The Governor General said that the battle against crime continues even with the considerable investments in the police and security forces.

The Government, she added however, is determined to win this war, notwithstanding what battles might have been lost. A number of measures have been projected in an effort to augment existing resources, among them the establishment of a forensic laboratory that will provide the Police with a higher quality of investigative and analytic capability.

“My Government also proposes to strengthen and increase the Special Services Unit (SSU), Introduce breathalysers for on-the-spot determination and apprehension of drunken drivers, Introduce full-time highway patrols in the most congested and dangerous roadways, including the Castries-Gros-Islet Highway, the Millennium Highway and specific trouble spots, and re-introduce duty free concessions on security equipment and its extension to cover households”, Dame Pearlette said.
