January 23, 2003 – The Pan American Health Organization has organized a regional workshop for SUMA Instructors from January 20 - 22, 2003.

The workshop has three objectives:

  • Update existing instructors in the latest version of the software (5.2)
  • enhance their instructors' skills
  • promote that the instructors be actively involved in coordination with the National Disaster Office in the establishment of a national SUMA team.

SUMA is short for Supplies Management and is a computer program, which uses simple software on laptop computers to track and sort incoming humanitarian relief supplies and donations and their destinations, allowing disaster managers to see what they have, send it where it is needed and most importantly account for it to the donors.

A representative from the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) will conduct a session on Methods of Instruction. All the participants will also be afforded the opportunity to complete a part of the SUMA training, which will evaluate the OFDA format.

NEMO was represented by Mr. Marcus Day, Deputy Chairman of the Supply Management Committee of NEMO, Coordinator Regional SUMA Team and a SUMA Trainer. The Supply Management Committee is preparing to provide training to the Public Service and District Committees in SUMA to facilitate the ease of reporting on stocks.
