Tuesday, March 05, 2002 - The sporting curriculum of schools is to be greatly enhanced following a presentation of some sporting equipment to the Ministry of Youth and Sports valued at twenty four thousand Eastern Caribbean dollars. The French Government, through its local representatives, last weekend presented fourteen table tennis boards and blockers to the Ministry of Youth and Sports as part of its continued contribution to the development of sports on the island.

Last December the French Embassy assisted St. Lucia by part-financing the OECS Table Tennis Tournament which was hosted here. St. Lucia emerged as the champions of the tournament. This latest initiative on the part of the French will help increase student participation in table tennis tournaments.

“The fact that the Table Tennis Association has their own developmental plans to expand and popularise table tennis throughout the communities, and our own plans to popularise the game throughout the schools, makes this is a very excellent gesture on your part to make available to us 14 boards,” noted the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Ernest Hilaire, who received the donation on behalf of the Government of Saint Lucia.

Prior to the presentation St. Lucia and Martinique had a friendly encounter in which Martinique emerged victorious. A number of exchange matches are planned between St. Lucia and Martinique for the year in the area of table tennis, volleyball and football.
