Monday, September 09, 2002 - Another community has benefited from the Poverty Reduction Fund “Social Recovery Programme”. The community of Fond Gens Libre situated at the base of Gros Piton participated in an official handing over ceremony Sunday, of a Drain and Footpath project.

Chairman of the Fond Gens Libre Community Project Committee, Jimmy Haynes says the community celebrates more than just the footpaths and drains. According to Haynes, this gesture demonstrates the community’s willingness to collaborate and to form alliances which he says contributed to the success of the project. This included the Poverty Reduction Fund, the World Bank and the Government of St. Lucia among others.

Haynes also lauded the immeasurable effort of the men of Fond Gens Libre for voluntarily taking on such an arduous task of excavating rocks and soil using traditional agricultural implements like Pick Axes, Shovels, Hoes, Clobbers and forks to bring that project to reality.

“We worked hard to get it and we are going to work harder to keep it and we want to work even harder to get more, because we deserve more and we need more.” Haynes said.

Parliamentary Representative for Soufriere and Fond Gens Libre, Honourable Walter Francois, indicated how pleased he is with the development and growth of that community.

According to Mr. Francois the distinction which once existed between rural areas and towns are quickly diminishing because of the basic amenities like roads, electricity, telephone and water. Mr Francois indicated that now these drains and footpaths have been constructed, the community of Fond Gens Libre will experience better living conditions.

Over two thousand feet of drains and footpaths were constructed in the Fond Gens Libre Community.
