Monday, June 03, 2002 - The Government of St. Lucia via the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports and the China National Plant and Export Corporation, have signed an agreement for the construction of another primary school on the island.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dr. Didacus Jules says the contract, as part of the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) funded loan, was awarded by public tender and will see the new primary school being built at Union.

“The project is for a total sum of $EC7, 448, 889 and will involve the complete construction phase of the new primary school at Union,” said Dr. Jules.

The construction phase will run for 16 months with the school expected to open its doors to students in September of 2003. According to Dr. Jules the new primary school will also allow for the removal of the shift system at both the R.C. Boys and the Ave Maria Girls Primary School. The shift system designed as a temporary measure has been running now for 22 years.
