Tuesday, January 08, 2002 - The sub-optimal operations of credit unions and their apparent failure to come to terms with today’s business realities have prompted the need for the convening of a Co-operative Congress towards the latter part of this fiscal year. Registrar of Co-operatives Lucius Elivique says the upcoming congress will examine ways and of unifying and making stronger the cooperative sector on the island.

According to Mr Elivique, “Presently we have a number of cooperatives in St. Lucia but not really a cooperative movement. We think that if there is a cooperative movement, the deliverables - a multiplier effect and greater leverage could be generated.”

He says the proposed congress would also look at strategies that would make cooperatives more competitive as well as to show more concern for the community in which they operate. “This is one of the principles of the Cooperative Movement - that they be mindful of the community which has two meanings – one the community of members and the actual geographic location from which they operate,” said Elivique.

The Registrar says the outcome of the congress would hopefully establish a task force charged with the responsibility of implementing the recommendations emanating from the discussions.
