Wednesday, March 07, 2001 – Her Excellency the Governor-General acting in accordance with Section 110(2) of the Constitution of Saint Lucia has been pleased to appoint Mr. Selwyn Vincent MBE to the Office of Parliamentary Commissioner for St. Lucia. Mr. Vincent is expected to take up his appointment from March 15, 2001 for a term of three years.

Mr. Vincent brings to the post a wealth of experience having worked with the Labour Department for over twenty years, serving as Assistant Labour Commissioner and later moving up the ranks as Labour Commissioner from 1986-1998. Upon his resignation as Labour Commissioner Mr. Vincent also served as consultant in the field of industrial relations on a part-time basis from 1998-1999.

The former Labour Commissioner obtained his training in Labour Administration in the United Kingdom and Canada during which time he had a short stint at Oxford University. Mr. Vincent also received training in Occupational Health and Safety in the United Kingdom and Canada and is the holder of a diploma and certificate in that area.

St. Lucia was not the only country to benefit from the services of Mr. Vincent. Some years ago he served as Labour Officer in the Ministry of Labour in Jamaica, and the OECS representatives on the West Indies Regional Labour Board.

The role the Parliamentary Commissioner is to investigate complaints against government ministries and statutory boards. The office of the Parliamentary Commissioner also deals with human rights issues.
