The Cabinet of Ministers has agreed that St. Lucia should observe three minutes
of silence on Thursday, September 20, 2001 from 11 a.m. in honour of the victims
of the terrorist attacks on the United States.
Prime
Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony is appealing to persons throughout the
length and breadth of the island to spend the time between 11:00 a.m. and 11:03
a.m. on that day in silence as St. Lucia pays its respects to those who lost
their lives in the tragedy. Dr.
Anthony suggests that all activity should come to a standstill during that time. “I
would like all radio stations, workers in the public and private sector – the
banks, hotels, supermarkets, factories, farms – all minibus operators and
other drivers on the road at that time, to stop whatever they’re doing for
these three minutes and spare a thought and some moments of silence and
inactivity in memory of the victims of this terrible tragedy,” the Prime
Minister said. In
the days leading up to that time, the government will engage in an extensive
public awareness exercise to encourage participation in this display of respect
for those who died, and sympathy and empathy for those who survived this
disaster. The
Prime Minister has also directed that all flags on public buildings be flown at
half-mast that day. - end - |
