Wednesday, September 19, 2001 --  Saint Lucia has inaugurated a National Council on Human and Social Development, implementing a decision taken by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Council on Human and Social Development and applicable to all member states.

Anthony ServerinThe Council, chaired by Saint Lucia’s Ambassador to CARICOM, His Excellency Anthony Severin, will assist in developing a new, holistic approach to human and social development in Saint Lucia The Council held its first meeting last Friday.

According to Ambassador Severin, the establishment of the Council is expected to lead to better coordination of activities in the social sector. Ministers responsible for the social sectors sit on the various national councils.

In the case of St. Lucia, you would have the Minister for Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports,  the Minister for Health, Human Services Gender Relations, the Minister for Home Affairs and Labour and the Minister for Community Development Culture and Cooperatives. So in effect you will now have a greater level of coordination, consultation and input from those various social bodies,” Severin explained.

The Council will function as a sub-committee of Cabinet.
