Tuesday, August 14, 2001 Saint Lucia is making an addition to its steadily growing list of recreational attractions with the opening of the island’s first-ever managed camping site on September 1, 2001.

A venture of the Saint Lucia National Trust, the spacious outdoors facility situated at Anse La Liberte in Canaries is for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. It will offer two types of  tent accommodation, a four mile trail, a place for patrons to sit, relax and chat, cultural activities, among other features.

Workers will be hired from the surrounding community.

“Initially, because there is always uncertainty with business of that nature, we cannot just go and employ a whole number of persons,” said Giles Romulus, Executive Director of the Saint Lucia National Trust. “We are going to have a site manager, a senior ranger, site maintenance people, rangers and house keepers.”

Romulus said it is the National Trust’s intention to run the camp site on the same principles as a hotel “because all we have are two different kinds of accommodation, one is elevated, one is a bare tent”.

Romulus took the opportunity to announce that the National Trust is stepping up its efforts to sensitize Saint Lucians about the importance of conserving and preserving their environment. In this regard, the Trust has acquired the services of a Peace Corps Volunteer to assist with its education and awareness programmes.

“He will be joining us on September 1 and our intention is to develop our programme in the education and awareness field and make, for example, entertaining programmes where people can go out and learn about Saint Lucia in a very fun-filled way. We are thinking of programmes at Pigeon Island on weekends where parents can drop their children and children can just learn about Saint Lucia, learn to swim and so on,” Romulus explained.
